De Volkskrant launches Volkskrant Select, a unique edition-based app developed by imgZine

A close cooperation over the last couple of months between Dutch publisher De Volkskrant and imgZine has resulted in Volkskrant Select, a unique edition-based product which will allow readers to preview a selection of ten articles from the next day’s newspaper.

With the application’s launch, De Volkskrant will leverage the great advantages of mobile to immerse readers in the journalistic process, providing background information, photographs and news items that are updated in real-time. The app is equipped with a ‘day and night look’ which makes for a comfortable reading experience every moment of the day. De Volkskrant also placed a great deal of focus in the application’s design, using interactive features such as a video-enhanced cover.

Every day, the Editor in Chief of De Volkskrant selects ten articles from the next day’s newspaper, which will be updated in real-time and published at 10pm. For €1,79 per week readers have access to every edition – but they will get one story per day for free. Current members of De Volkskrant can access the new application without paying extra money.

The release of Volkskrant Select will be complemented by a redesign of the newspaper’s website – an initiative which seeks to bridge the divide between print and digital publishing to craft a “newspaper of the future.” Philippe Remarque, Editor in Chief of De Volkskrant called it a “pioneer step.
