The New Era of Work: What exactly is it and how does it affect our behavior?

Hester Gras

In the New Era of Work, you are free to come and go at any time. You can bring your own device (BYOD), operate from a flexible workplace and save information in the cloud. Oh, and your tasks will be delivery-oriented. Last week, LOGEION, a Netherlands-based organisation for communications professionals, organized a lecture on the New Era of Work. During this lecture, Communications Specialist Huib Koeleman explained how organizations should adapt internal communications in the New Era of Work. In this post, we summarize the first part of his lecture, aiming to answer two questions: What exactly is the New Era of Work? And how do these changes affect our behavior?

The New Era of Work

According to Huib Koeleman, 70% of today’s higher educated groups schedule their own working hours. We also operate from home for an average of six hours and 60% of employees work more and suffer greater stress. Consequently, the new generation’s needs are changing.
This is what they expect:

  • Every employee’s contribution is equally significant
  • Hierarchy is a thing of the past; everyone must be able to share ideas with their boss
  • They choose their own tasks. If they don’t like it, then they’re gone!
  • Reward intrinsically
  • Sharing is caring: they want to know what’s going on.
  • They don’t need your help and actively seek for information themselves.

The New Era of Work: Relevant, Social and Mobile

Like all changes, the new way of working carries its burden of new challenges. For instance, there is less bonding with colleagues. We need to work digitally in order to share information and our colleagues are operating at different locations and times. In addition, there is an information overload: there is too much stuff to absorb.

In order to make sure that your employees read internal company news, it should be relevant, social and available at any time, anywhere and from any (mobile) device. An internal application would thus be an appropriate solution.

In the next blog, we will describe six concrete steps for companies to adapt their internal communications strategy to embrace this New Era of Work. If you have any comments, feel free to share it with us below!
