Hester Gras

We Are Social recently published a comprehensive trend report of 376 slides on worldwide statistics for the internet, social media and mobile usage. We picked three statistics that show how mobile usage is changing and shared the complete slide deck with you.

1) Number of active mobile social accounts is growing

The report shows that there are 2.087 billion active social media accounts over the world. While the number of active social media accounts on mobile devices is significantly lower (1.695 billion accounts), this number is increasing rapidly. There is an 23% year-on-year increase of active mobile social accounts (equal to 313 million accounts per year). With this, it grows faster than the year-on-year growth of overall active social media accounts (+12%, equal to 222 million).

The number of web page views via mobile phones accounts for 31% and shows the biggest year-on-year increase (+39%). Web page views on tablets also noticed a year-on-year increase of 17%, but the overall share of web page views on tablets is significantly lower than for laptops/dekstops and mobile phones. Finally, the share of web page views on other devices only counts for 0.1%. However, they do show a year-on-year increase of 18%.

3) Messaging apps are on the way

The biggest shift highlighted in the report was the increasing adoption of mobile social. While Facebook is still the widely most used social network, the rapid adoption of chat apps is undeniable. The graph below shows the top 8 social platforms, which exists out of five messenger apps, chat apps or Voice over IP apps (VIOP). This includes QQ, Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, WeChat and Skype. All of these messaging apps are growing at averages of more than 25 million active users per month.
